Vicky Ellis

Artist Statement:

The work of artist weaver Vicky Ellis spans over 50 years. She originally trained as a furniture designer, became a weaver, and then worked in gallery education for many years.

Seven years ago, Vicky’s granddaughter asked her to teach her to weave. As a result, she became completely hooked on weaving again and since that time has exhibited widely. Her work influenced by the Bauhaus Movement bridges fine art and functional weaving. She uses undiluted colours to interpret paintings she loves and the sea she lives near. Recently she has created works as woven responses to artists such as Mary Lloyd Jones and Clive Hicks-Jenkins.

Natalie Chapman

Artist Statement:

In my work I delve into the depths of human experience, navigating themes of trauma, acceptance, and the pervasive inequalities faced by women. My work serves as a visual exploration of the complexities of these issues, seeking to provoke thought, evoke emotion, and inspire dialogue.

At the heart of my artistic practice lies a profound fascination with the human psyche and its capacity to endure, transform, and transcend adversity. Through dynamic compositions and vibrant colour, I aim to capture the struggle, offering viewers a glimpse into my resilience and vulnerability.

Trauma, in its myriad forms, serves as a central motif in my work. I confront the pain and anguish that often accompany traumatic experiences, while also illuminating the resilience and strength that can emerge from such adversity. Through bold brushstrokes and expressive gestures, I strive to convey the complexity of trauma on individual lives.

Alongside these ideas , my work also delves into themes of acceptance and healing. I celebrate the journey towards self-acceptance and empowerment, emphasizing the importance of embracing one's own truth and reclaiming agency in the face of oppression. Through my paintings, I seek to create spaces of catharsis and empowerment, inviting viewers to confront their own struggles and find solace in the shared human experience.

In addition to personal narratives, my work also engages with broader social issues, particularly the inequalities and injustices faced by women. I challenge societal norms and expectations, shedding light on the systemic barriers that perpetuate gender inequality. Through bold imagery and symbolic motifs, I aim to provoke critical reflection and spark conversations about gender, power, and privilege.

Ultimately, my paintings serve as a visual testament to the resilience, strength, and indomitable spirit of the human experience. By confronting difficult truths and embracing vulnerability, I hope to inspire empathy, foster connection, and catalyze positive social change.

Through my bold and striking paintings, I invite viewers to embark on a journey of self-discovery, empathy, and empowerment. Together, let us confront the shadows of the past, embrace the complexities of the present, and envision a more equitable and compassionate future.
